Many people associate the word “brand” with companies or specific products. But if you think about it more, you realize that each of us has a personal brand. Brand is a set of features that characterize a certain product, organization, service or a person, which leads to recognition and potential relationship with this brand. Everyone has a personal brand but very few people actually think about it or manage it for their own benefits.

Knowing yourself and implementing it into your personal brand can boost your recognition. It can also help you tremendously with your future career in the way you want! Employers are looking for people who know who they are, what they want and what their qualities are. If you follow these steps, you should be prepared to nail your interview and get the job of your dreams!

Know yourself

This is the first step you need to take in order to define your brand identity. Think about yourself and how do you want to be perceived.

  • What are the areas you are good at?
  • What are you strengths and weaknesses?
  • What kind of person are you?

It is very important not to focus only on your professional life but also your personal! Do not try to define yourself as a person you wish to be but take the time to analyse yourself as you are. This also helps you to start looking for a job that really fits you as a person and professional. At the same time, it should eliminate situations when you are at a job interview asking yourself “what the hell am I doing here”.

Be consisted

If you have already defined yourself, make sure it is the real you. Authenticity is the key and if you are different in the real life than your brand, people easily detect it. Make sure you are not changing your identity according to a specific a job position. Not only you will be confused and probably mess it up, but it will not take a long time for the employer to find out what the truth was and what did you lie about.

Implement your personal brand into your CV and cover letter

The first contact point with your dream employer is the CV and cover letter you are applying with. The content is very important. Make sure you include all the relevant information about yourself and let them know what the benefits of hiring you are! What many people underestimate is the visual part of your CV and cover letter. Long story short, make it reflect your personality, use the same layout and design for both of these documents and make it unique.

Review your social media profiles

Yes, your future employer is going to stalk you. Start with your LinkedIn profile. Make sure the information you provide are in line with your personal brand. Make your profile also a bit personal instead of completely professional. Look at your Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or other social media profiles. Update all the relevant information and check your activity if it is in line with the way you want to be seen.

Update your brand regularly

People are constantly changing and so is your personal brand. Update it according to the situation. If you acquire a new skills or if you change your status from e.g. regular employee to manager it must be reflected in your brand.

Your personal brand is nothing else than being aware of who you are and how do you want to be perceived. Take some time, think about it and nail the interview! Good luck!
