Australia is home to multiple world-class universities, known for being research led and internationally prestigious. Here are the top 7 “worst” of the best Australian Universities from the 2018 QS World Rankings. Before we dive in, you should know that the universities are ranked on six key factors: Academic Reputation, Citations per Faculty, Employer Reputation, Faculty to Student Ratio, International Faculty, and International Student Body.
The best of the lowest ranking Australian universities: Edith Cowan. ECU offers more than 300 courses to prospective students and focuses on working with the government and businesses to provide real solutions to global problems. They also pride themselves on offering a multitude of online courses and has more than 27 thousand students in total. All this is pretty impressive, considering the university itself is only around 25 years old.
Southern Queensland is a relatively small university, with only 13,500 students. It is based in Toowoomba, Queensland and is known for being the most multicultural university within Australia because it represents over 90 nationalities within its student population.
Placing 5th on the list of Australia’s “worst” universities is Australia Catholic University. After being established in 1991, it is one of the only Australian universities with a centre in Europe which was opened in Rome in 2015. They have also won architectural and interior design awards for campus buildings and are heavily involved in research in four main areas. These are health, education, theology and philosophy and the common good and social justice.
Charles Sturt is a larger university, with about 43,000 students currently enrolled. It has multiple campus’ available to students and was recognised as Carbon Neutral in July 2016 by the Australian Government, so is a good choice for those students wishing to be a bit “greener”. The name for the university was inspired by a British explorer, Captain Charles Sturt, who ventured to South Australia.
Southern Cross is home to three campuses: Coffs Harbour, Lismore and the Gold Coast campus, with branches in Sydney, Melbourne and Perth for international students as well. There are around 15,000 students and unsurprisingly the Gold Coast campus has the highest proportion of students enrolled. Who wouldn’t want to be at university by the beach?!
The University of New England just misses out at being the worst university. It is home to around 22,500 students and is another public university in New South Wales. If you’re looking for a scholarship as an Aussie student it’s a good option as they offer students more than $5 million in scholarships, bursaries and prize money. It was originally a college of the University of Sydney, but became completely independent in 1954.
Graduating last in the class is the University of the Sunshine Coast. Established in 1994 and located north of Brisbane next to the Mooloolah River National Park, the university focuses its research on sustainability and regional engagement. Unfortunately, it places last on the ranking of Australia’s worst uni’s in 2018 with only around 12,000 students, but we think the Kangaroos look pretty cool!
Obviously, these aren’t actually the worst Australian universities, but they do rank lower than the others listed. Check out the best universities in Australia to see the rest of the list!
