Which learning type works best for you?

Everybody is unique in their own way, also in their styles of learning. Just like we all have our personal interests and hobbies, we are also different regarding the ways we acquire and process information.

It is essential to note that there is no wrong way to learn. Study techniques used by some people to great effect may seem rather strange to others.

Styles of learning refer to the way in which a person processes, comprehends, and retains information.

There are seven different types of learners and if you know which style works best for you, there is a higher chance that you will achieve academic success.

But which one is yours? Each of these learning types is unique and fascinating in its own way and you will find out why if you keep reading.

Verbal learners

These types of learners best express themselves in spoken and written words. They are the people who usually have a rich vocabulary and enjoy wordplays such as twisters and rhymes.

Verbal learners also love reading and writing in their free time.

The best study techniques for them are to read their notes aloud or have someone recite new information to them. This way, they are able to process the information much quicker.

As for their education, verbal learners often get degrees in the fields which allow them to express themselves verbally, such as law and linguistics. Also, they often become journalists, writers, or public speakers.

Logical learners

Logical learners use their power of deduction and observation to process information. They generally enjoy playing logic games such as chess. These people also have very strategic and organised styles of learning.

Processing information by classifying and dividing it into smaller groups is their forte, and they are known for performing complex calculations with ease.

The best study technique for them is to extract key points from their study materials and make organised lists. They often pursue careers in science, business analytics, and mathematics.

Their weaknesses include:

  • learning without a proper structure

Kinesthetic learners

Also known as physical learners, these people process information by performing various activities. Usually athletic, they enjoy outdoor activities and sports in their free time.

They have an active lifestyle and they are always on the move.

It is typical of them to use their bodies to learn and they usually need to be on the move while they are in the process of learning.

Therefore, the best study technique for them is doing hands-on activities and performing different moves to process new information.

For kinesthetic learners, it is also helpful to conceptualise information with the help of real-life examples. A kinesthetic learner won’t be able to learn something easily unless they play out a situation or draw a diagram of the concept they are trying to learn.

The career paths kinesthetic learners often follow are theatre studies, physical therapy, and construction management.

The strengths of kinesthetic learners are:

Visual learners

Visual learners use images, charts, and diagrams to process information. If you see someone who enjoys drawing, painting, and colouring in their free time, it is very likely that they prefer learning visually.

They learn best by creating a visual representation of the information they are trying to process.

The most effective strategy that visual learners use is creating diagrams, charts, and colour-coded maps. For instance, a visual learner would sooner process information by watching a movie adaptation of a book than by reading the book.

Musical learners

Musical learners process information through sounds and music. They enjoy listening to music in their free time and while studying. Also, musical learners are often musicians themselves and have a good sense of rhythm.

The best study technique for them is using clever rhymes to remember vital information and reciting their notes aloud.

A musical learner will often have songs and jingles in their heads and use them while studying. The career paths musical learners often follow are sound engineering, foreign languages, and of course – music.

They often find it hard to:

  • concentrate in a noisy environment

Interpersonal learners

Interpersonal learners need a social setting to process information. They enjoy playing group sports in their free time and they often socialise after work or classes.

In addition, they love being involved in extracurricular activities and working in teams.

They learn best by creating and participating in study groups or role-playing situations. An interpersonal learner will often depend on the feedback of their peers.

Public administration, education, and human resources are some of the career paths interpersonal learners often follow.

Their strengths are:

However, interpersonal learners do not excel in:

  • working independently
  • maintaining focus while studying

Intrapersonal learners

Finally, intrapersonal learners enjoy studying in a solitary setting and spend most of their time alone and far away from the crowd.

Most introverts are intrapersonal learners but this is not always the case, as even some extroverts need time alone in order to focus on their studies.

Documenting study habits and finding out what works best for them is something intrapersonal learners will often do. It is important to remember one thing – an intrapersonal learner always prefers to study alone.

They are very goal-oriented and they often pursue a career in entrepreneurship, creative writing, or software engineering.

Their strengths are:

  • great concentration
  • good planning skills

Their weaknesses include:

  • too timid to ask for help when faced with a problem
