This year, the QS World University Rankings featured 37 Australian universities among the best in the world, two more than last year. Seven of the universities are among the global top 100 while a further 10 are in the world top 300.
In general, Australian universities made remarkable improvements in this year’s ranking. The University of Sydney is the only Australian university that dropped down the list, while the University of Western Australia improved its ranking to join the top 100 universities in the world.

1. Australian National University (20)
Located in the capital of Australia, Canberra. The Australian National University is the best university in Australia and 20th best in the world. Known for its outstanding student satisfaction record and graduate employability, it is the only university formed by the Parliament of Australia. Two former Australian prime ministers are also among its alumni.
2. University of Melbourne (41)
The University of Melbourne ranked 2nd in Australia and 41 in the world. The university is associated with nine noble laureates which is the most of any Australian university. Founded in 1853, it is the second oldest university in Australia.
3. University of New South Wales (45)
Ranking 3rd in Australia and 45th in the world, the University of New South Wales (UNSW Sydney) improved up to four places this year. Known to have produced more millionaires than any other Australian university, the institution is distinguished for its research in solar power, HIV treatment and quantum computing.
4. University of Queensland (47)
Founded in 1910, the University of Queensland is the 4th best university in Australia and 47th in the world. It is a founding member of the prestigious Group of Eight (Go8) universities as well as a member of the global Universitas 21. In addition, UQ has won more Australian Awards for University teaching than any other Australian university.
5. University of Sydney (50)
Established in 1850, the University of Sydney is the oldest university in Australia. This year, it ranked 5th in Australia and 50th in the world. The university is known to offer the broadest range of programs of any Australian university. It is also a member of the prestigious Group of Eight (Go8).
6. Monash University (60)
Monash university ranked 6th in Australia and 60th in the world. Located in Melbourne, It grew from a single campus in 1958 to become the largest university in Australia. It is also member of the Group of Eight (Go8).
7. University of Western Australia (93)
Taking the 7th place is the University of Western Australia. It improved its world ranking from 102 last year to 93 this year to become one of the global top 100 universities. Founded in 1911, it is the first university in Western Australia. Also, it is the only Western Australian University in the Group of Eight (Go8).
8. University of Adelaide (109)
Also improving its world position from last year is the University of Adelaide. Ranking 8th in Australia and 109 in the world, Adelaide has 5 Nobel laureates with over 100 Rhodes Scholars among its alumni. Established in 1874, it is the third oldest university in Australia. It is also a member of the Group of Eight (Go8).
9. University of Technology Sydney (176)
The University of Technology Sydney continues to improve its ranking yearly. Now ranking 9th in Australia and 176 in the world, UTS is one of the youngest and largest universities in Australia. Most importantly, it is a member of the Australian Technology Network of universities (ATN). Despite its name, UTS also has strengths in areas like nursing, law and sports.
10. University of Newcastle (224)
The University of Newcastle overtook the University of Wollongong this year to become the 10th best university in Australia and 224th in world. Established in 1965, UON is especially distinguished for sociology, mining engineering, and architecture.
