5 Reasons Why You Need to Do Your Internship in Amsterdam

5 Reasons Why You Need to Do Your Internship in Amsterdam

Most of us have to do an internship sooner or later during our studies, but choosing the right city might be a little bit overwhelming.

But no worries, I got you covered!

Amsterdam is one of Europe’s most visited cities and if you’ve ever seen pictures of Amsterdam or have been there yourself, you probably know why:

You just can’t dislike the capital of the Netherlands with its thousands of people riding their (world famous) bikes every day and canals surrounding the old-fashioned wobbly houses. It’s definitely a city worth experiencing for a few months!

But in case you need some more convincing – read on!

 1. The best of ALL worlds!

No matter if you’re a city lover, a beach enthusiast or a nature devotee: All of those attractions are just a bike ride away.

Beach: the most famous one is called “Bloemendaal Aan Zee” which offers a variety of beach clubs and places to eat and drink. You can always ask some of your colleagues to join you or even attend a meeting of a Facebook group. Some are created for newbies in Amsterdam who want to get to know people! You definitely won’t feel lonely!

Parks: One, we absolutely adore, is called “Vondelpark”, which invites you to take a stroll after work or just hang with your friends or colleagues, get some snacks and listen to music.

City: check out “Negen Straatjes”, which is a nice place to run errands or get a bite to eat. Of course the world famous museums like Rijksmuseum or Anne Frank Huis should also be part of your bucket list. And at night the whole city will turn into a lovely sea of lights.

2. Foood!

Foodies won’t be disappointed when coming to Amsterdam.

Whether it’s Chinese, Argentinean, French, American or- of course- Dutch;

Amsterdam will meet your expectations, no matter what you’re craving at the moment. Food can range from Bitterballen, which are deep fried meatballs served with mustard, to the world famous Stroopwafels – two thin waffles stuck together with a layer of caramel or syrup. My personal favorite!

There are also a lot of vegetarian or even vegan options available – unlike in most other European cities!

A nice place to have breakfast (or any other meal, really) is called “Pancakes Amsterdam”. You can try Pancakes in too many variations to even imagine! Also you can give typical Dutch “Poffertjes” a go. Sounds like a perfect Sunday morning to me!

3.   Get your heart rate UP!

People living in Amsterdam mostly use bikes. There are almost 900.000 bikes in Amsterdam, to be a little more specific.

Of course, you can always take the tram or bus- Amsterdam has a very well-constructed transportation system. But (not only!) when it’s sunny outside, why don’t you just take the bike or even walk? There’s so much beautiful stuff you are going to miss when you’re just watching everything go by through a bus window. Plus, after biking and walking, you won’t have to feel guilty for all the great food you’re snacking on throughout the day.

If you’re more like a couch-potato who won’t get motivated alone, maybe you should join one of the many fitness groups in Amsterdam meeting every week in Vondelpark!

4.  City of Diversity

Talking about diversity, Amsterdam is the first thing that’s going to pop up in your head after you’ve spent some time here.

Of course, the Gay Pride Parade is one good example which supports diversity to the fullest, encouraging you to be exactly who you want to be.

But other than the Gay Pride Parade which only takes place once a year, there’s also a street called “Reguliersdwarsstraat” which is a colorful and trendy gay street known all over the world where you can find tons of coffee-shops, clubs and restaurants.

Moreover, Amsterdam is the most diverse city in Europe and home to more than 178 different cultural backgrounds. This again calls for lots of different foods, as we have already talked about.

People in Amsterdam just live their lives to the fullest and don’t really care what other people think of them.

In my opinion, we should spread this vibe all around the world!

5. Work hard- PLAY HARD!

There’s a good reason why the Netherlands came out top for the country with the best Work-Life balance.

Of course primarily, you come here to work. You want to learn something and get a great insight into a company’s’ “way of life”, but what would life be if you were to sit at the table for a whole 12 hours?

In Amsterdam you will see people sitting on the porch of their house, sipping beers and enjoying life! It’s also a very common thing to have Friday-After-Work-Drinks!

When it comes to partying, Amsterdam offers everything  you ever wished for in your life:

I already talked about the Pride, which definitely is one of the biggest parties in Amsterdam. But other than that we also celebrate Kings Day, which is a Public Holiday offering you plenty of possibilities to put on your dancing- shoes. There are DJs playing parties in public and decorated boats floating down the canals. It’s basically an all-day citywide street party.

Other than that there’s always the possibility to do a nice pub-crawl or have a good time on the dancefloor in one of Amsterdam’s plenty clubs.

If you’re more a festival-kind of person, don’t worry! There are more than 300 festivals hosted in Amsterdam every single year. You’ll find pretty much everything from Dance-Music Festivals to Culinary festivals.

Now it’s up to YOU!

So if you are ever looking for an internship opportunity in Europe, you should definitely consider Amsterdam. As you have just read, it’s a lot more than just cute houses and people riding their bikes!- It’s so much fun and you will  give your CV a little push by creating a good base for your future career.
