Drinking games have been around for centuries, even as far as in ancient Greece and China. Students everywhere are still set on continuing this ancient tradition and gather together at friend’s houses for some pre-party drinking. Let’s be honest, drinking games are not some ritualistic and physical activity of building relationships. The sole purpose of a drinking game is to pass time and get wasted fast and with as much fun as possible. Then comes the difficult part, which drinking game should be played? Don’t make it too complicated; games that are easily understood by everyone are always the best option.

Around the world in 8 drinking games!

Ever wondered what drinking games are played in the Land of the Morning Calm? Here is your answer! By the end of this post you will be ready to start and try out these fun, easy and new games. If you ever visit South Korea you will soon find out that Koreans can drink like no other.

Alcohol plays a big role in the Korean culture and is indispensable during work gatherings with colleagues, socializing, and family meals. With so many occasions to drink Koreans have come up with some unique drinking games and most include soju. In case you do not have soju, you can of course try them out with your own creative combinations!

1. 3-6-9 (Sam-yuk-gu)

Less is more and this game is simple and definitely heaps of fun! All you have to do is:

1. Get your group of friends together
2. Be a good host and give them the drink of their choice in hand
3. Be ready to guzzle it down!

The main purpose of this game is to say numbers out loud, counting up from 1. However, for each number that contains a 3, 6 or 9 you must clap. For example: 1-2-Clap-4-5-Clap-7-8-Clap….and so forth. If you are lucky/skillful enough to get to 30-39, 60-69 or 90-99, essentially you clap through the whole thing. In the case, it is your turn and your number contains two of the clapping numbers (33, 36, 39, 63 etc.), clap twice. So, (30)Clap-(31)Clap-(32)Clap-(33)ClapClap…

In the end, the one who ends up saying 3, 6, or 9 instead of clapping has to drink! And you repeat the cycle, starting from 1. Several rounds and a few drinks later, you will notice that it becomes more challenging.

Tip: For the geniuses among you, try also not saying the numbers that are divisible by 3, 6 or 9.
But be warned, drinking and divisions will not be a pretty sight!

2. Titantic/The submarine

Don’t worry! You don’t need to dress up as Rose or Jack. However, after a couple of rounds who knows what could happen? You might even think you are the King of the World. So this is what you need to do:

1. Sit with your friends is a circle around the table.
2. Pour some beer* in a glass. It should be half full.
3. Carefully drop an empty shot glass in the beer. Make sure it floats!
4. Take turns pouring alcohol into the shot glass.

*Feel free to use something else instead of beer and soju

How much you pour into the shot glass all depends on you. But, the one who sinks the “Titanic” needs to drink the whole glass.

3. Baskin Robbins 31

Before starting, you all sit in a circle. In Korea, it is customary that the players will start by chanting the Baskin Robbin’s 31. But, if you feel this is a little too much for your level of musicality, you can fastforward to the next step! It is a game of numbers again. Taking turns, each player is allowed to say up to three successive numbers until 31 is reached. It is the player’s choice whether to say 1, 2 or 3 numbers.

For example: If you start, you could say 1 or 1, 2 or 1, 2, 3. The one after you has the same choice, but then starting from the last said number. As you might have suspected, the player that in the end is stuck with the number 31 has to drink.

4. Flicking the bottle cap

Take a soju cap or any other similar bottle cap. Make sure that it has a loose end. Twist the loose end until it is straight (like shown in the image below). Afterwards, you simply have to take turns flicking the loose end until someone breaks it off and has to drink. Only one flick per turn is allowed.

5. Hi Low

After you are done flicking around the bottle cap, there is a whole new game that you can play with that same bottle cap! Who would have known that one bottle cap can be so much fun? The game is started by the one who won the bottle cap game (the one that had to drink).

Inside the bottle cap, there should be a number and the one starting the game has to say if it’s a number between which numbers it is (for example 1 – 50). The other players will then start guessing what the number is and the one with bottle cap hints if its higher or lower. The one who guessed it right is safe (so no shots for them), however the players to the left and right of that person have to drink!

6. Sense Game

This game is mostly popular amongst students in South Korea. Basically the only thing you have to do is saying a number from 1 to the number of players. Two people saying the same number or whoever is last, are the losers and the losers have to drink. It is a drinking game after all!

7. Fool’s Game

In Korean, babo (바보) means “fool”. The fool’s game can be really confusing. A player has to start by saying a number between 1 and 5, while at the same time showing a different number with their hand. For instance, the first player says 2 while holding 4 fingers up, so he is safe. Now the next player has to say a number of fingers the previous player has up while showing a different amount with their hand and so on. The loser is the one that says the same number as they are showing with their hand or if they don’t say the number of fingers the previous player is holding up.

8. Image Game

The Image Game is all about votes, if you get the most votes you lose (or win, if you enjoy taking shots!). The first player has to start by saying something descriptive. Such as: “Had most girlfriends/boyfriends”. Everyone then points at the whom they think fits the description the most. If you receive the most votes you have to drink. image game, drinking games

Now go out there, scout for some drinks and give these games a try! But remember…drink responsibly!
