How to make the most of your internship

How to make the most of your internship

An internship is an essential part of many study programs across the world. When entering the job market, having had an internship on your resume automatically makes you stand out. There are service providers like assignment expert who help students with their resume creation. Even if it isn’t part of the curriculum per say, a part-time or summer internship is always an excellent add on to your resume. If you are taking part in an internship or are looking to begin one soon, here is how you should approach it.

1. Think of the internship as an investment

An internship may not bring in the hard cash (with some exceptions of course) but it is nonetheless an important investment into your future. You will gain practical skills that will follow you into all your future projects. It is a great way to see how the ‘real life’ looks like and make useful connections. It is also an opportunity to explore what kind of organizational culture fits you. Besides that, it is a chance to find out what you like and what you are good at. When applying for an internship, always take into consideration which field is close to your heart and try to land your internship in a company within this field.

2. Pay attention to the details

It may only be 3 months of your time, but this does not mean you can skip over the details of the job. Little things may not seem important (so what if you’re 5 minutes late?) but the truth is, if you are not on time, they will find someone who is. Don’t be the first one to leave your work table as soon as the shift is done. If there is a dress code in the office, respect it and try to align your style with your coworkers. Keep your work-space organized and always be willing to help with those little annoying tasks that nobody wants to do. Paying attention to details shows the company you care, a quality that cannot be overlooked.

3. Have a positive attitude and ask questions

How much do you learn from your internship depends on you. Ask questions if you don’t understand. And if you do understand, ask some more! By asking how things work in the bigger picture, you show interest in the job and willingness to learn. These are key qualities employers look for, and a great way to lock in a great referral. Be motivated and suggest ideas. By being motivated and hard working, you will likely get to work on interesting projects and have bigger responsibilities. Don’t be scared to show your opinion and share your ideas (and accept the feedback of course), because that is what companies want the most- a fresh view on what they do.

4. Socialize

An internship is a great opportunity to gain important contacts for your future. Moreover, you can find many good friends along the way. Enter the office with a smile on your face and greet people. Be interested in your colleagues and their job. Don’t eat or have a coffee alone. Don’t be too shy to talk to older colleagues but be respectful. If you have any fun activities in the office like foosball or table tennis, do it! It’s a great way to break the ice and become a part of the community faster. People may not seem interested at first (they likely see a lot of interns passing in and out of the company) but once you open up, you’ll find they are happy to see a new face in the office. Socializing will make you memorable, and ensures you actually enjoy your time there.

5. Have fun!

An internship comes down to what you make of it and you only get as much as you put in. Try to enjoy it even if it’s not exactly what you expected. Being an intern is all about trying new things. Show the world (and yourself!) that you’re ready for the challenge.
